Last week, the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) Trail Solutions team finished their three month long project to build the first three miles of beginner and intermediate adaptive mountain bike trail in Lost River State Park. This is the first phase of a multi-year project which may ultimately result in 30-40 miles of mountain bike trail. The first phase began in the recently-acquired acreage in the northwest corner of state park property, along Dove Hollow Road, less than a half a mile south of the northern intersection of Whetzel Hollow Road. Click here for the position. The new trails are ready for riding–in fact, the Hardy County Cryptids NICA team rode the trails two weeks ago for the first time. Although the trails have been constructed, work still remains to build the signage and trailhead map. The trails have not yet been named, mapped for GPS, and uploaded into the official WV State Parks maps or Trailforks.com, but check back on this progress later in the spring.

The first phase consists of nearly three miles of trail, mostly beginner, one with intermediate. We have received a second Recreational Trails Program grant for $250,000, and we expect to begin work on phase II in late 2026. Our goal in the second phase is to construct trails that will connect with Miller’s Rock trail along Big Ridge into the core of the park.

We are planning a grand opening even in the spring, most likely in May, so please follow along for more details!
