Trails

Lost River Trails Coalition’s mission encompasses stewardship of all trail systems within Hardy County, but its primary area of focus for development is Lost River State Park (LRSP). Lost River State Park is a beautiful outdoor destination located in the Potomac Highlands region of West Virginia. It encompasses over 3,700 acres of lush forests, rolling hills, and breathtaking mountain vistas with some structures dating back to the early 19th century. The historic log cabins, sturdy stone shelters and walls, and meandering trails, all identified on the National Register of Historic Places, were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the mid 1930’s.

The park offers a wide range of recreational opportunities, including hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. With over 26 miles of trails, visitors can explore the stunning landscape and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Horseback riding is also a popular activity, with guided tours and rental horses available.

LRTC received a Trail Accelerator Grant in 2023 from the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) to survey the park and develop a long-term trail plan within LRSP. Three miles of adaptive-capable beginner and intermediate trails have been flagged for further construction in the first phase of the trail plan. When completed, they will be the only purpose-built adaptive mountain bike trails in West Virginia and will serve as the primary training ground for the Hardy County Cryptids NICA mountain bike team.

Subsequent phases will connect the beginner in intermediate trails in the northernmost section of the park to Big Ridge and southward toward the core of the park, connecting with existing facilities.
