It’s July 16, and the Lost River Classic is just one month away, on Saturday August, 16. It’s that time of year that we run some special promotions in the regional cycling community to get people excited for the race.
As you might already know, we have promoted the Howard’s Lick Climbing Challenge, which will award free registration to the fastest man and woman to climb the iconic South Branch Mountain (the biggest, pro-tour caliber paved climb in Hardy County) for 2025. This competition will run through until the clock strikes midnight on August 1, and so far Zach Racine and Indrė Sabaliūnaitė lead the way. Can they hold out just two more weeks?
Dirty Kitten Registration DFL: Dirty Kitten Gravel Race is the next big race in the mid-Atlantic, coming up the last weekend of July. Registration closes Wednesday, July 23 at 11:59pm. Whoever registers last before bikereg closes will luck into a free entry into the Lost River Classic!
The Exactly Average Kitten Crusher: For those familiar with the mid-Atlantic gravel racing scene, the Kitten Crusher needs no explanation. Short and extremely steep, this little grass-covered path in the Dirty Kitten Gravel Race requires a mountain bike negative gear ratio to stand a chance. Whoever finishes precisely in the middle of the pack (rounding to the nearest number) out of the weekend’s races (July 26-27). Riders must use Strava and make their rides public so that I can read the results. For example, if there are 360 riders for the weekend, whoever places the 180th fastest time will receive free entry. Only your fastest segment time will appear on the leaderboard so measure your mediocrity accordingly.
Charlottesville Tuesday Night Worlds KOM/QOM: Virginia’s most famous weekly underground race-paced ride has probably counted more pros, national champs, and other elite cyclists (per capita) than any other similar ride in the region. This is going to be an incredibly tall order for the KOM because someone on a TT bike suspiciously destroyed the segment record by 90 seconds a few weeks ago (by hammering in the “neutral zone”). Anyone who winds up with the segment KOM or QOM by Tuesday, August 12 will get free entry.
Other discounts
We still have other great discounts available: Anyone who registered for Monster Cross in the winter, Gritventure, B3 (Bikes, Beers, and Bluegrass), GRUSK, and Dirty Kitten can get a $10 off coupon code.
Any current NICA mountain bike rider from any statewide league is eligible for a $20 off coupon code to get their feet wet in the sport of gravel racing. The junior races are only $55 already, so NICA riders will be an extremely affordable $35. This price basically pays for the food and T-shirt.
Last, we are still offering team discounts. It’s always more fun to ride with your friends, so if 5 members of a team sign up, they can either A) get a discount code for free entry for a 6th teammate or B) each teammate can get refunded $13
